Equine Ailments - A to Z
Abscess - a cavity containing pus (bacteria, fluid and cellular debris) which may be formed anywhere in the body, sometimes under the skin in response to an infection or in the foot, causing extreme lameness. Treatment will depend on the site of the abscess; the vet will sometimes prescribe antibiotics. In cases of foot abscesses the farrier may be called out to pare away the foot and release the pus. Sometimes a poultice is used to draw out the infection. See Strangles. |
