Equine Ailments - A to Z
Curb - A strain or sprain of the tendon at the back of the hock, indicated by a firm, perhaps warm swelling about 10cm (4in) below the point of hock towards the inner side. (the calcaneo-cuboid ligament) this is known as a ‘true’ curb and is compressible. There may possibly be slight lameness in the early stages sometimes as the result of trauma or sprain. Reduce acute inflammation with cold-water application. A vet will treat inflammation; rest usually results in complete recovery. A ‘false’ curb is a bony enlargement of the head of the external small metatarsal bone situated towards the outer side and in view of its nature is not compressible. |
