Equine Ailments - A to Z
Ringbone and Sidebone - these are diseases affecting the lower part of the limbs and feet often attributed to the horses conformation or action. They are brushing, over-reaching and cutting injuries caused by the impact of the shoe or hoof, resulting in slow-growing bony swellings on the lower limbs. If they restrict the action of a joint, it can lead to long-term lameness; between the joints it often resolves after rest and treatment.
Treatment - Anti-inflammatory drugs and surgery may be required. Ringbone and sidebone may sometimes be prevented by the use of brushing boots and over reach boots. |
