Equine Ailments - A to Z
Sore Shin - the front of the cannon becomes sore and inflamed due to a tear in the outer lining of the bone or periosteum. Occasionally caused by a blow or knock, though more often through concussion galloping on firm ground. This condition is most common in two year olds, especially in the racing season, when young animals are put into work for the first time. It does also affect older horses, usually when they are brought into work after a ‘laid off’ period.
Treatment – Anti-inflammatory drugs, cold applications and depending on the severity of the condition, rest or light work. |
