Equine Ailments - A to Z
Spavin - A bony enlargement on the lower and inner aspect of the hock causing lameness in the hind leqs. The cause is unknown though it is regarded as hereditary and through poor conformation. Working an immature horse to early and/or severe exertion may be a contributing factor. It is a form of arthritis affecting the small bones in the hock.
Treatment – the outlook in most cases is favourable, particularly if the horse is under 12 years. Depending on the type of Spavin and its severity the vet may prescribe painkillers and/or rest for six months. When exercise resumes bring the horse into work gradually with walking exercise. Avoid working the horse in tight circles. |
