Equine Ailments - A to Z
Urticaria (Nettle Rash Hives) - This is a skin disorder not a disease in which round lumps or swellings appear on the skin on various parts of the body. They vary in size from the size of a pea to swellings as large as soup plates. It is more common in young horses and in horses kept in on a full working diet. It is also seen in horses turned out onto lush pasture and the signs can develop within half an hour of turn out. There is rarely any irritation with this disorder; it is an allergic reaction, usually caused through a change of diet or an insect bite. Treatment – In most instances the condition disappears spontaneously. Cooling lotion can be applied. The vet may administer antihistamine or corticosteroids to relieve the symptoms as soon as possible and avoid reappearance. |
