Bulgarian Breeds of Horse

East Bulgarian

A warmblood horse originally developed from Thoroughbred, Arab and half-bred horses. The breed was established in the early twentieth century and has since been upgraded by using only Thoroughbred blood. In the past it has been used for working the land and as a riding horse. It stands between 16 and 16.2h.h. and is similar in conformation to a good Anglo-Arab with more of the thoroughbred characteristics; the head is not dished. It is either chestnut or black in colour; has active forward paces and an amenable nature. A controlled breeding programme over the last century has led to a progressive improvement in the breed and it has become fleeter of foot and more desirable as a competition horse. Though it does not compare with the thoroughbred for speed it has been used with some success for steeplechasing and in most other areas of equestrian competitive sport.
