Finnish Breeds of Horse

See users pictures

This is the only officially recognised breed of Finland and there are two varieties - the Finnish Draught and the Universal. These two types were descended from many different imported breeds that were crossed with the Finnish native ponies.
Today's Finnish horse is a good general-purpose horse used as a draught horse and under saddle.

It stands at up to 15.2 h.h. and is strong, active and good natured. The conformation is good and sturdy with a pony like quality. It has an attractive head with kind eyes and alert ears; the neck is powerful and crested; the shoulder is sloping; the girth is deep; the back is short and strong; the hindquarters are round and muscular with a fairly low set tail; the limbs are strong with good bone and well shaped feet. It makes a good trotter when selectively bred - trotting races are very popular in Finland and it also has the power and staying ability for timber hauling.
