Poitevan

A French breed that is derived from several other imported breeds in particular the Netherlands and Denmark. Used originally to work on the marshlands of the Poitou Region of France, for which it has suitably large feet. Today the mares are used mostly for crossing with Jack Asses for the production of mules. It is not a good example of a horse, being of poor mental ability and having many conformation defects. A large heavy head; a short straight neck; straight shoulders; long back and sloping quarters. It stands between 16.2 and 17 h.h. and is usually dun, though there are some bays and browns.
