Turkoman
A descendant of the Turkmene it is an ancient Asian breed formerly used by
nomadic tribes around the Gobi desert, most likely for herding livestock. In
the tenth century Baghadi it was used as a mount for the Caliph's guards.
In 1971 The Royal Horse Society of Iran encouraged the breeding of Turkomans
for racing and it is now a much-prized racehorse showing great endurance and
speed. Herds of semi-wild Turkomans still roam the Russo-Iranian borders
and though the predominant colour is bay, it may also be grey, chestnut,
black and cream gold.
It stands at up to 15.3 h.h. has a long face with a
straight profile, noted for its fine silky coat and floating action, it
tends to be a slow maturing horse.
