Jutland
Taking its name from the Peninsula where it is bred, this is an ancient
breed dating back to the twelfth century, that was used in the Middle Ages
to carry the knights with there heavy armour into battle. It is a heavy
draught horse of medium height, active and solidly built with a willing kind
nature.
The modern breed of Jutland was greatly influenced in 1860 by the imported
English stallion Oppenheim LXII, he was half Shire, half Suffolk and is
regarded as one of the founders of the breed. His sixth generation
descendant Aldrupp-Munkedal was a dominant stallion from 1890 to 1912 and
his chestnut colouring with flaxen mane and tail has become predominant,
though roans, bays and black sometimes occur. It stands at 15 to 16h.h. is
heavily built with exceptional strength; the head is squarish with a very
gentle expression; the neck is short and thick; the shoulders are strong and
well muscled; the chest is deep the body is exceptionally deep; the
hindquarters are round and muscular; the limbs are short and strong with
plenty of bone and some feather.
