Kirghiz - Novokirghiz

This breed has been developed from the native Kirghiz, which was a pony type animal used for agricultural, originating in the Tien Shan region of the U.S.S.R. The present day breed was upgraded in 1954 by infusions of Thoroughbred and Don blood to produce an exceptionally strong little horse of three different types; the basic, the heavy and the riding. These are all multi purpose horses used for riding, in harness and as pack animals and they are all ideally suited for working in their native, high altitude, mountain region.

It is a sure-footed horse standing between 14.1 and 15.1 h.h. and is usually bay, though other solid colours do occur. Though it tends to have a long back and often is a little straight in the shoulder, it is exceptionally hardy and has good strong limbs with plenty of bone and hard feet. Used for both work and as a leisure horse, it is active and willing with an amiable nature.
