Freiberger

This light farm horse originated in the Jura region of Switzerland, where it was developed, at the Avenches Stud, from crossing the Franches-Montagne with some lighter breeds. Three quarters of all Freibergers trace back to the stallion Vaillant, foaled in 1891, whose great grandsire was an English half-bred, and whose grandam was of French Thoroughbred and Anglo-Norman breeding. Since 1889, when some heavy horse blood was added, it has been progressively upgraded by infusions of Anglo-Norman, Arab and Shagya Arabian blood from Babolna Stud in Hungary.

The Freiberger stands between 15hh and 16hh it is short-coupled and strong, with good sound limbs and feet; the head is slightly Arabian with intelligent eyes and shapely ears; the neck is strong and well shaped; the shoulders are good and sloping; the girth is deep; the back is short; the body is deep and round; the hindquarters are well muscled and round; the legs are strong with plenty of bone. It moves well and is very sure footed and makes an attractive riding horse with plenty of stamina.
