I was wondering if anyone could help.
At my yard we have two colts who are aged 18 months and there is word around that one of the colts may have attacked on one of the older horses. The older horse had a large wound on his neck, approx 10cm in diameter and 5cm in depth. The colts are not nasty in nature just playful and young, I was wondering if anyone else had come across this or if it's even possible for such a young pony to cause such damage? I'm new to the whole horse World and didn't know if it's even possible for such a young pony to cause such damage
Another reason that makes me think it was not them a few of the other older horses had cuts on their necks but looked more like damage from catching themselves on barbed wire
Desperate for help!
Thanks |

| Yes colts do sometimes attack geldings. It happened to my gelding, he had a real stallion bite over his neck and was very badly injured. At the time one of the mares was in season and they were arguing over her. It was most unexpected but I witnessed it with my own eyes and had to fight off the horse that attacked the gelding. Hope yours is ok now. |

| In response to Katlyns responce i think that her situation may have been caused by the fact that her gelding was out with a stallion AND a mare. In this surcumstance there will of course be an issue just look and a wild herd situation there is only one stallion and another male horse gelded or not will be seen as a thret to the stallion so he can not be blamed for his actions. in answer to your question can colts do this kind of damage my answer would be yes BUT if kept in soley male groups colts/stallion will live quite happily with each other once the pecking order is sorted. my gelding has lived with a stallion twice his size for years and there has never been a problem we just never turn out a mare with them for obious reasons hope this helps x |
